Our work starts with the community
Afar communities know what they need. FSA works with residents and local leaders to shape programmes around those priorities. We bring nearly 20 years of work in Afar and a staff largely based in the communities we serve. That local knowledge matters, whether the work concerns water for herds, health care in remote areas or dialogue over grazing land.

Water and hygiene
Water systems must work for people and livestock. FSA builds solar-powered systems and supports hygiene and sanitation work shaped by local needs.
18 systems serve 131,496 people and 418,753 livestock.
Health and nutrition
FSA works with local health services to reach families through vaccination, maternal care, mobile outreach and nutrition education.
33,476 children received their first vaccinations; 119 health facilities were supported across 22 woredas.
Women and girls
Women organise savings groups, build businesses and share knowledge about reproductive health. FSA supports that work through training and practical resources.
3,862 savings groups have 24,160 members; 3,464 women have received small-business support.
Livelihoods
Pastoral livelihoods depend on healthy grazing land and resilient herds. FSA supports rangeland restoration, fodder, moringa planting and small-scale irrigation.
More than 380 hectares of grazing land have been restored.
Education
FSA builds and repairs classrooms, supplies learning materials and supports adult literacy. The Desert Child Sponsorship Program helps children stay in school.
10 permanent school blocks and more than 90 temporary learning centres have been built or established.
Peacebuilding
FSA works with elders and local leaders on mediation and dialogue, including discussions between Afar and neighbouring regions over water and grazing land.
Emergency response
During drought, conflict and displacement, FSA provides food and helps families protect or rebuild their herds.
11,346 people received food support; 587,135 animals were vaccinated and 15,940 goats distributed for restocking.
