Emergency food for pregnant and breastfeeding women
During the 2017 drought, FSA gave three months of food to 340 pregnant and breastfeeding women and 410 children.
Afar is prone to drought, and repeated droughts do more than cause crop failures and food shortages. They kill livestock, which most families depend on to make a living, and leave households more vulnerable each time. The region also has poor roads and few public services. People here have less access to schools, health care and clean water than almost anywhere else in the country.
In 2017 the Sugum and Karma rains (June and July) largely failed across the whole Afar region, and the humanitarian situation reached emergency level. To reduce the impact of the drought, FSA distributed food to children and to pregnant and breastfeeding women.
In total, 750 people received enough food for three months, from June to August 2017: 340 pregnant and breastfeeding women and 410 children.
