A training centre for young people in Awash
FSA built a skills training centre in Awash town for young people living on the street, with support from the Embassy of Japan and Mitsubishi Corporation.
FSA works on water, women’s economic empowerment, education and health in the districts of Afar that are most disadvantaged and left out. These are pastoralist areas that often face emergencies because of drought. One of the groups we focus on is young people.
Many young people in Ethiopia face serious problems and constant hardship. In the towns and cities, the number of young people getting into trouble with the law is growing. In Awash town alone, more than 500 people are thought to live on the street, and over half of them are between 15 and 24 years old. The number grows every day, as poverty pushes people to leave the countryside for the towns in search of a better life.
To improve their lives and give them other ways to earn a living, FSA built a training centre in Awash Fentale district. We have trained vulnerable young people there in skills such as running a small business, using computers, woodwork and metalwork, so they can earn a living and contribute to their community.
